Dear all,
Thanks for all the great reactions! I actually didn’t finish the series: there are still two sketches sitting on my deks for more than half a year now. Reason for this is that this little chicken died on January 8th. She had started moulting just before new year and that, combined with the stress of the fire works in my street, was too much for her. Due to this disappointment, the fact that she almost looked like a grown up already and because I had a very busy time last half year, this series got on a lower priority.
Next month I will actually have more time and I hope to turn the two sketches into real illustrations: one where she is shaking her feathers and an other one where she is in fact dead. Although it is a pity she died, for the series it isn’t that bad: it has a real beginning and end due to this misfortune.
The chicken turned out to be a blue partridge and looked like a Breda fowl despite the fifth toe that came from her silky parent.

What a lovely young lady. I have 3 of my own! They move around quickly – did you have photos to draw from? The drawings you did are of such high detailed quality!

Simply beautiful drawings – any plans to turn this into somethig more, a book maybe? Many years ago we ‘grew’ a chicken from chick to adult – great fun – sorry yours died.

This visual journal has been a great inspiration for me. Two of my own chickens, which I also raised up from chicks, were killed too and as frustrated as I was with the situation, I found motivation in your journal to simply raise up more. I hope your upcoming projects will be just as attentive and beautiful.

These drawings are great, you’ve really captured the character of chick growing up in all the different positions and poses you’ve chosen. Lovely drawing style. Amazing stuff – we want more!

I found your blog via boingboing and wanted to echo the other comments in saying that your drawings are fantastic. To capture that much detail in pen and ink requires skill enough, but to manage it while your subject is constantly strutting and clucking and kicking around is even more impressive. Thanks for sharing!
